🌿 Semana Santa – more than Easter

In the Netherlands, Easter is mainly about togetherness: egg hunts, brunches, and spending time with family during the Easter holidays.

In Spain, it is very different. Here, people dedicate an entire week to the origins of Easter. Semana Santa is not just a weekend, but an intensely experienced week full of tradition, emotion, and religion.

Instead of egg hunts, you will see impressive processions in the streets, carried by centuries-old brotherhoods. It is a living story that has been passed down for more than 2,000 years.

Whether you are religious or not, it is fascinating to see how this story has developed, evolved, and been experienced over the centuries. Without judging it, it is simply interesting to understand what this week is truly about.

🌿 Sunday, March 29 – Palm Sunday (Día de Ramos)

The week begins with the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. People welcome him with palm branches and see him as a savior. In Spain, families go to church carrying palm branches, often beautifully decorated, especially for children. The atmosphere is light, hopeful, and almost festive.

Monday to Wednesday

During these days, tensions rise. Jesus preaches in the temple and challenges those in power. In Spain, the first processions begin, filling the streets with music, incense, and slowly moving religious statues.

🍷 Maundy Thursday (Jueves Santo)

Jesus shares his last meal with his disciples: the Last Supper. In Spain, this is one of the most important moments of the week. Large night processions take place, often in complete silence.

✝️ Good Friday (Viernes Santo)

The day of the crucifixion — the turning point of the story. In Spain, the atmosphere is intense and solemn. Heavy processions with impressive religious figures move through the streets — sometimes in silence, sometimes accompanied by drums.

🌑 Holy Saturday (Sábado Santo)

A day of silence. According to tradition, Jesus lies in the tomb. In Spain, everything becomes quieter — a moment of reflection before everything changes.

🌅 Easter Sunday (Domingo de Resurrección)

On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. While Easter in the Netherlands often revolves around eggs, here it is about transformation: from death to life, from darkness to light.

The atmosphere shifts to joy. Bells ring, people gather, and life is celebrated.

In summary

From hope to doubt.
From life to death.
And ultimately from darkness to light.

That is why Semana Santa is still experienced so intensely in Spain.
