The Holy Chalice survived war, looting and even a shipwreck.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <h2>The cup of the Last Supper<\/h2>\n\n      <p>\n        According to Christian tradition, Jesus used this cup during the Last Supper. On the evening before his crucifixion, he shared bread and wine with his apostles. In Christianity, this event marks the origin of the Eucharist, during which the life, sacrifice and message of Jesus are commemorated.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        For many believers, the Holy Chalice is therefore much more than a valuable historical object. The cup symbolises unity, sacrifice, forgiveness and hope. It is also frequently associated with the legendary Holy Grail, which knights are said to have searched for throughout the centuries in medieval stories.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        It cannot be conclusively proven that this is the cup used by Jesus. However, the upper part is known to be a very ancient agate drinking cup originating from the Middle East. Its richly decorated base and golden handles were added centuries later.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <h2>An enormous campaign of looting<\/h2>\n\n      <p>\n        During Napoleon\u2019s invasion of Spain, this extraordinary treasure was also in danger of being lost. The French army looted churches, monasteries, palaces and even royal tombs. Works of art, gold, silver and religious objects were taken away or melted down.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        According to Spanish historian Francisco Garc\u00eda del Junco, the Napoleonic thefts in Spain constituted one of the largest episodes of looting in history, comparable to the large-scale theft of art during the Second World War.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <h2>Hidden inside a small chest<\/h2>\n\n      <p>\n        To keep the Holy Chalice out of French hands, it was taken from Valencia to Alicante and subsequently transported by sea to Ibiza. The cup was concealed inside a small chest, together with dozens of other chests containing valuable possessions from the cathedral.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        During the voyage, the ships encountered a violent storm and were wrecked. Only twenty-two of approximately sixty chests could be recovered. Miraculously, the small chest containing the Holy Chalice was among the rescued cargo.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <h2>The courageous guardian of the Chalice<\/h2>\n\n      <p>\n        The Valencian priest Pedro Vicente Calbo, whose surname is also recorded as Calvo, played an important role in protecting the Chalice. He trusted almost nobody and kept the relic\u2019s hiding place strictly secret.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        Nobody was permitted to guard or move the Chalice without his approval. What may have been considered excessive distrust ultimately saved one of Valencia\u2019s greatest treasures.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <p>\n        After years of journeys, war and danger, the Holy Chalice eventually returned safely to Valencia.\n      <\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"sv-location\">\n        <h2>Where can you see the Holy Chalice?<\/h2>\n\n        <p>\n          The Holy Chalice is kept in the <em>Capilla del Santo C\u00e1liz<\/em>, the Chapel of the Holy Chalice, inside Valencia Cathedral. The cathedral stands in the historic centre, between Plaza de la Reina and Plaza de la Virgen.
